Notes and Definitions

Important notes!

  • For all 3 workload rates, individual water requirement may vary by +/- 0.25 qt/hr
  • When performing work/exercise with ground crew ensemble, fire-fighting gear or other similar restrictive or impermeable clothing, arrangements should be made for remote site measurement of WBGT and 10 degrees F added to the measurement before using these tables
  • Rest means minimal physical activity, i.e. sitting or standing, in the shade if at all possible

Definitions:

  • Acclimatized: Becoming accustomed to a new climate or environment. Heat acclimatization requires up to 14 days 2-4 hours per day outside becoming accustomed to the hot environment. Heat acclimatization can be lost too, within 18-28 days of inactivity from hot environment.
  • Unacclimatized: A worker unaccustomed to the hot environment. Example: individual working in an air conditioned office 8 hours a day 5 days a week.
  • LIGHT/EASY WORK: Desk/clerical work; driving vehicle; gate security duty, walking on hard surface @ 2.5 mph with = 30 lb load, weapons maintenance, manual of arms, marksmanship training, drill and ceremony
  • MODERATE WORK: Light to moderate lifting/pushing; routine aircraft refueling and maintenance; walking on hard surface @ 3.5 mph with < 40 lb load, walking on loose sand @ 2.5 mph with no load, patrolling, low crawl and high crawl, defensive position construction, field assaults
  • HEAVY WORK: Heavy lifting/pushing/pulling; pick and shovel work, walking on hard surface @ 3.5 mph with = 40 lb load, walking on loose sand @ 2.5 mph with load
